Curtis W. Mewbourne was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in November 1935 and passed away in Tyler, Texas, in June of 2022.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in January 1958, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army. He began his career as a petroleum engineer working in several different areas of the oil and gas industry, before founding Mewbourne Oil Company in 1965.
Today, Mewbourne Oil is one of the most successful oil & gas producers in America and continues to be privately owned by the Mewbourne family.
Mr. Mewbourne’s legacy as one of the greatest oilmen of his generation, a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather, and employer, will live on through his beloved company for generations to come.
The University of Oklahoma names the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering to honor Curtis W. Mewbourne.
The University of Oklahoma renamed the Mewbourne College of Earth & Energy in honor of Curtis W. Mewbourne.
Granted the Top Hand Award by the Permian Basin Petroleum Association (see video below).
Inducted into the Permian Basin Hall of Fame.
Throughout his life, Curtis Mewbourne maintained a steadfast and unwavering commitment to sharing his success with others. His generosity impacted the lives of thousands of students at all grade levels through educational support, scholarships and internships.
In recognition of these efforts the University of Oklahoma named both the School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering, and the College of Earth and Energy in his honor. Today, Mewbourne Oil Company continues to carry on the legacy of Mr. Mewbourne through unmatched support of students at not only OU, but other schools throughout Texas and New Mexico.
